From the very beginning through the design and construction Art Hotels Sapporo strived to be a hotel that was "barrier-free". The concept is to have a premier hotel that can support and provide easy access to every guest, regardless of their age or ability. To further the idea of well being for all, the hotel designs nutritional and balanced anti-aging menus that has a strong focus on always serving fresh and healthy food.
In recognition of our efforts to provide a warm greeting to all, with special touches like the low reception counter and Heartfelt Rooms, the hotel was the first to be authorized in Japan by the Heart Building Law (an Act concerning buildings which are accessible to the elderly and physically disabled).
Low Reception Counter
This counter provides easy check in and check out services to wheelchair users. From the hotel entrance with a barrier-free design, the nearest handicapped parking space is only 10 m away.
Heartfelt Room
Designed with the barrier-free concept to create a spacious room where everything is easily accessible to people with special needs. Wheelchair friendly and suitable for the elderly, our heartfelt attitude is reflected in every corner of the room, such as the indication light for door charm and a sleeping sofa for the attendants.

Art Hotels Sapporo was the first hotel in Japan to adopt the damage tolerant design developed by Kumagai Gumi Co., Ltd. Steel dampers with narrow slits are connected to the main steel structure of the building. When an earthquake occurs, these dampers collapse and absorb the energy, leaving the main structure undamaged. Art Hotels Sapporo has 2,000 pieces of Steel-Slit Dampers to withstand a major earthquake equivalent or greater to the Great Hanshin Earthquake.
Steel-Slit Dampers (Vibration-Control Technology)
Steel-Slit Dampers are attached to each upper floor of the building to absorb the vibration energy in the event of a major earthquake. The building can be returned to its original state simply by replacing these dampers. In experimental testing of these dampers it was found that their function was not impaired even after three successive major earthquakes.
